In addition to our guided tours, students can make a take-home craft that is geared towards our exhibits. Currently, we are offering the activities listed below. You can also print this form as a pdf by clicking here.

Beaded Bracelets or Key Chains
Make your own beaded bracelet or key chain just like the Native Americans did when they lived in the Saginaw Valley years ago. Learn what beads were used for and who wore them.

Pottery Making
Make your own clay object using a variety of techniques (Teachers: please bring a container to take the pots back to school).

Log Stamping
This was a technique used by logging companies to label ownership of logs. Students will be able to reenact this process using log stamps and inkpads.

Tissue Paper Trees
Before the Lumbering Era, Saginaw County was covered with trees. Students can create a tribute to our environmental history by creating a tree out of pipe cleaners and tissue paper.

History on a String
Take a trip back into Michigan’s history by put significant dates on a string time line. Take it back to the classroom and continue to add dates to it as you study new things.

Field Trips Q & A

Time: How long will we be at the Castle? A guided tour can last from one to two hours. Some factors would include the age of the students and activities included.

Preparation: When should you book a tour? We suggest that you contact us as soon as possible. We would appreciate at least two weeks notice before your arrival. However, if it is under two weeks, please call the Museum to see if there are any dates and times available.

Chaperones: Do you have all the help you need? Chaperones are a great asset when conducting a tour; not only do they help the students, but they also get a chance to experience the Museum for free! We ask that there be at least one adult for every five students so that there is adequate supervision during the tour. If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact us.

Activites: Do we have to add an activity? No, Activities are not a required add-on to your trip, however research has shown when students participate in hands-on activities they retain 70% more information. Some teachers take the activities back to the classroom to use as tools throughout the year. Some teachers allow students to take home their crafts the same day.

Supplies: Do you have all of the supplies needed for our activities?

Yes, we supply all of the material used that is required to make our activities. Please note that if students are making clay pots, teachers need to bring one to two boxes per teacher in order to carry the pots back to school. (An empty copy paper works very nice; typically we can put one class of 30 student’s pots in one box). If you have any questions or concerns please contact Ruth.
