History On The Move
History On The Move
History on the Move is our mobile classroom and museum geared for students in second through fifth grades. We are currently exhibiting our Junior Archaeologist Program. Students step onto History on the Move and step into the past as they learn about how and where an archaeologist works and why archaeology is important to the Saginaw Valley Area. Finally, students have the opportunity to become an archaeologist through hands-on activities that reinforce their math, science, language arts and social studies skills and knowledge. Through these hands-on activities your students learn what the artifacts tell us about the people who lived here long ago.
For all schools in Saginaw County, including public, charter and private, we bring History on the Move to your school free of charge. Each classroom participates in a 45 minute hands-on program. We can accommodate up to six classrooms a day. If your school has more than six classrooms interested in participating in the History on the Move Program we can schedule your school for additional days.
For schools outside of Saginaw County we invite you to schedule two or three classrooms to visit us at the Castle Museum at which time they would also receive a guided tour of the Castle Museum and History on the Move at the same time. History on the Move would take the place of a craft. The cost for the Museum tour and History on the Move is $3.00 for students and free for teachers and chaperones. The total time needed for this visit would be 2 hours.

Why should I schedule History on the Move to come to my school, or for our school to come to see History on the Move?
Research has shown that students have different learning styles, hands-on learning being one of them. Also, hands-on experiences enhance a student’s ability to comprehended and retain information, therefore helping a student to succeed in school and with state assessments.
What does a school need to have History on the Move visit?
The only requirement is a place to park the 60 foot truck. History on the Move is self-contained and does not need to connect in any way to your school. History on the Move is both heated and air-conditioned.
What if we do not have the needed parking for History on the Move?
Talk to your principal first, as there may be an available spot that is not normally used for parking that we might be able to use. If a spot does not exist on school property, check with businesses around you. Is there a church next door or across the street? Is there a business with a large parking lot? Typically if you ask in advance, businesses and churches will allow us to park there for a day or two if needed. Again, please talk with your principal before contacting a local business or church. If you need further information to give to these local businesses, contact Sheila Hempsted at 989-752-2861, Ext. 311.
