The American Soldier: From the Civil War to the War in Iraq

The exhibit assembles images taken from the earliest use of photographic apparatus to today’s digital cameras. It covers Americans in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, Boxer Rebellion, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq. This tribute is traveling the United States in a multi-year tour. It is the first time it is appearing in Michigan. The Castle Museum of Saginaw County History will host The American Soldier through April 10, 2010. We have several events planned in conjunction with this exhibit. We also have a companion exhibit on display called From Citizen to Soldier: Saginaw Veterans. For more information about the exhibit, or to schedule a group tour, please contact Ruth Mancina at (989) 752-2861, Ext. 315. School groups are welcome and should contact Heather Thompson at (989) 752-2861, Ext. 311.

Upcoming Events for The American Soldier:

  • Sunday, March 21st is Veteran’s Day at the Castle Museum. Admission is free for all veterans and their families, with a free hot dog for all our visitors from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. We will have military vehicles on display and re-enactors from different wars interacting with guests.

  • Every Tuesday in March at Noon we will have a guest speaker related to the American Soldier exhibit, except for March 16th, which is Book Club.

  • Several schools from throughout Saginaw County are participating in a project with the museum. They are reading the book America’s White Table by Margot Theis Raven. In the book a table is set in remembrance of our veterans. Each item on the table represents something related to our soldiers who have been killed in action or are still missing. We are re-creating that table here at the Castle and asking school children to decorate placemats honoring soldiers. We will display the placemats next to the table. This display will be located in our Family History Room. If a school is interested in participating they can call Heather Thompson at (989) 752-2861, Ext. 311 and we will send them some placemats
